- Shingle Roofing. The most popular type in North America, asphalt shingles work well for any shape of roof or home and are customizable for color and architectural style. Some options are specially designed to withstand wind and impact. Of all the types of roofing, the initial costs for shingle roofs are lower than other kinds, and their longevity leads to enduring value.
- Metal Roofing. Metal roofs are built from large, interlocking panels of metal fastened to the roof, resulting in minimal maintenance needs. These roofs typically have some of the longest longevity, though the upfront installation costs are higher. Since metal is heavier than shingles, it’s necessary to consider the added load-bearing demands on the home when choosing this option.
- Tile Roofing. Drawing on an age-old style, this type of roof uses overlaid rows of terracotta (clay), slate, or concrete tiles. Tile roofs are made of recyclable, fire- and weather-resistant materials that can add instant texture and character to a home.
- Cedar Shake Roofing. Built from tapered pieces of natural cedar wood called shakes, this style adds a unique curb appeal to homes and buildings. Shakes are usually made to order, which can increase wait time. Of all the types of roofs, it is perhaps most impacted by climate and is probably not the best choice for property owners in overly wet or dry environments.
